Configuring a DynDNS client

Back to contents

You will need to use a DynDNS.org client, to keep the DynDNS.org records updated with your correct IP address (because your IP address changes frequently). Many routers have inbuilt DynDNS.org clients, which makes it easy for some. For a partial list of routers with inbuilt clients go here. Please post in this forum if you find out that your router has an inbuilt DynDNS client and is not listed.

For those who don't use a router or if your router doesn’t have an inbuilt client, read on to configure a software DynDNS.org client.

These are instructions on how to configure DynDNS Updater v3, the free new official client for DynDNS (based on the old Kana Solutions client). If you wish to use a different client (or if you use a different operating system), look here, but beware – some clients can have difficulty detecting the correct IP address and can cause you trouble.

First you will have to download and install the DynDNS Updater. Get it from here or from this direct link.

When you start DynDNS Updater for the first time it will start a "wizard" interface, press "Next".

Choose "Local Area Connection" and press "Next"

Press "Detect my IP"

DynDNS updater should detect the correct IP (we are going to make sure it does later), press "Next"

Enter a name for your hosts, and press "Next"

Enter your DynDNS.org username and password, and press "Next"

Choose "automatic download", and press "Next"

Check that the hostname is correct and press "Next"

Check "automatic update" is ticked and press "Next"

Press "Finish"

DynDNS updater will minimise to your system tray

Right click on the icon, and tick "Start with Windows"

Right click the icon again, and select "Settings"

Click the "IP Address" tab and select "Allow me to configure manually" and then press "Configure"

In the "Website" box type "http://checkip.dyndns.org:8245/" then press "OK", then "OK" again

Phew your done!
